If you’ve ever attended a Chinese New Year reunion dinner, you’ve probably noticed the proud presence of a whole fish—head, tail, and all—gracing the table. But have you wondered why it’s such a big deal? This cherished tradition isn’t just about taste; it’s steeped in cultural symbolism.
In Chinese, the word for fish (鱼, yu) sounds like the word for abundance (余, yu). A whole fish represents the completion of a journey and hope for prosperity and surplus in the coming year. As Zeen Chang, Managing Partner of Bai Chuan Management, explains “A whole fish at the reunion dinner table symbolizes blessings, prosperity, and fortune shared among loved ones. The bigger the fish, the greater the blessings to come!”
This year, Kwai Chai Hong, in collaboration with sponsor Bangsar Heights Pavilion (BHP), brings this vibrant tradition to life with Bountiful Blessings (年年有余), an immersive art installation inspired by the Chinese idiom Nian Nian You Yu (Wishing You Abundance Year After Year).
