Lanterns, Legends & Osmanthus Magic: Experience Mid-Autumn at Kwai Chai Hong

This Mid-Autumn Festival, Kwai Chai Hong is once again weaving folklore, art, and imagination into its historic laneway. From 29 August to 12 October 2025, step into Moonlit Blossom 花月 — a dazzling installation inspired by Chinese legends, blooming Osmanthus flowers, and the timeless glow of the full moon.

The Tale That Inspires

At the heart of this year’s theme lies the legend of Wu Gang (吳剛), the woodcutter forever tasked to chop down a self-healing Osmanthus Tree. No matter how strong his strikes, the tree continues to bloom in defiance, symbolising perseverance and beauty in the face of all odds.

On one side of the moon, visitors will witness Wu Gang’s eternal toil. On the other hand, the graceful Chang’e (嫦娥) and the gentle Jade Rabbit (玉兔) remind us of the celestial beauty that watches over the night sky.

Co-founder Zeen Chang shares: “The story of Wu Gang teaches us that intentions alone aren’t enough action, dedication, and persistence must follow. At Kwai Chai Hong, we hope to preserve the fleeting beauty of the Osmanthus bloom while sharing meaningful folklore for generations to come.”

Step Into the Glow

Your journey begins at the Red Bridge (紅橋), where over 100 floral lanterns light the way, with 48 floating gracefully above. At the alley’s end, the centrepiece awaits a glowing moon that tells Wu Gang’s story, as Osmanthus blossoms swirl and dance across its surface.

In collaboration with the award-winning studio Seeing Artelier, the myth is reimagined through augmented reality and digital art. Expect an immersive mix of tradition and tech that pulls you straight into the realm of Wu Gang.

Beats That Echo Through the Alley

Adding rhythm to the story, the acclaimed DRUM UP JB transformed Wu Gang’s relentless axe strikes into a powerful live percussion act. Each beat thundered with tenacity and resilience and they’re coming back! Catch their special performance on Sunday, 7 September 2025, at 6 PM, for a show that promises to be both meaningful and electrifying.
